LED strip lighting: flexible and stylish

LED strip lighting: a modern way to add light and warmth

LED strip lighting keeps gaining ground, and for three simple reasons: it goes almost anywhere, it is easy to fit, and it looks contemporary. It solves lighting problems in rooms where a conventional fitting would be awkward or simply too much.

What it does well

LED strips are the obvious answer under kitchen cupboards. They light the worktop evenly and remove the shadow you cast over your own hands when chopping or reading a recipe. The profile is thin enough for tight spaces, and because the strip is continuous it lights the full run of the cupboards without gaps.

Beyond the kitchen, strips work along plinths, where they add a quiet accent at floor level, and above wall units, where the light bounces off the ceiling and fills the room softly. Inside a cabinet or a display case they pick out glassware or a collection, and because they run cool they do not harm what they are lighting.

Where else to use them

Strip lighting is a good way to create indirect light in a living room, a dining room or a bedroom. Run it into a coffered ceiling, a recess or around a light well and it adds a depth that a ceiling fitting cannot.

On a staircase it does two jobs at once: it looks good, and it makes the stairs safe to use at night without turning on a main light.

For outdoors there are waterproof strips rated for the job. They light garden paths, terraces and even pool surrounds, and they hold up to weather that would finish an indoor product in a season.

Choosing well

Two things matter more than price: build quality and colour temperature. A higher colour rendering index (CRI) means colours look natural rather than washed out, which is worth paying for anywhere you can see the light landing on food, skin or fabric. Warm white between 2700K and 3200K is what makes a room feel comfortable; cooler light suits a workshop, not a living room.

Fitting is straightforward and many people do it themselves, though an electrician is worth having for anything wired into the mains. Most strips have a self-adhesive backing. For power you can use a plug-in adapter, or a driver concealed in a cupboard for a tidier result and better control.

In short

LED strip lighting improves a home out of all proportion to what it costs and how long it takes to fit. Whether you are updating a kitchen, adding accents in a living room or lighting a garden, it is one of the most useful things you can buy. If you are not sure which strip, which driver or which colour temperature, ask us.
