bticino Classia: installation, claw frame and sets

bticino Classia is Italian design at an affordable price: a clean square shape, cover plates in 16 colours and a mounting frame with claws that also fits old installations. In this article we explain what the series offers, which colours it comes in, how it is installed and how to put a set together.

What Classia is

Classia is the bticino series for people who want a modern Italian look without the premium price of Living Now and Light Now. bticino is an Italian brand dating back to 1936 and part of the Legrand group - the same quality mechanisms, with a simpler design.

• A clean shape - crisp square lines and a gently curved key.
• Mechanisms in two colours - gloss white (RW) and matt satin black (RG), for example switch RW4001 or RG4001.
• Switches with or without an LED indicator - the small light helps you find the switch in the dark.
• Cover plates with a metal trim - gold, chrome or nickel, for a more refined look.

Cover plates in 16 colours

The cover plates come in 16 colours, grouped into four families. The colour is at the end of the code - for example R4802M2TM is a cover plate for two round wall boxes in titanium. Every colour is available in every size.

Wall boxes: German and Italian standard

Classia fits both round wall boxes (German standard - the standard in Bulgaria) and rectangular Italian 503E wall boxes.

• German standard: each wall box gets its own mounting frame (2 modules). The wall boxes are set 71 mm apart, centre to centre, and covered with a shared cover plate - up to 5 gangs in one plate (R4802, R4802M2 ... R4802M5), horizontally or vertically.
• Italian standard: a 503E wall box for 1, 2 or 3 modules with the R4703 mounting frame, a 504E for 4 modules with R4704 and a 506L for 7 modules with R4707.

R4702G mounting frame with claws - for old wall boxes too

The Classia mounting frame comes with screws (R4702) or with claws (R4702G). The claw frame does not rely on the wall box screws - the claws open out and grip the side of the wall box. That is why Classia can also be fitted to:

• old wall boxes with broken or missing screws;
• crookedly set round wall boxes;
• older installations where you do not want to break into the wall.

The R4702 screw-fixed frame works with any type of wall box. The mounting frames are adjustable and sit tight against the wall, and on plasterboard their insert can be removed so that the mechanisms and the cover plate sit perfectly flat. When several wall boxes are side by side, the frames link together and align themselves.

How to put a set together

A set has three parts. The cover plate clips on last, over the installed mechanism.

1. Mounting frame - R4702G (claws) or R4702 (screws) for a round wall box; R4703 / R4704 / R4707 for Italian wall boxes.
2. Mechanisms - switch RW4001 (1 module), 15 W USB A+C charger RW4191AC (1 module), Schuko socket with child protection RW4141 (2 modules).
3. Cover plate - R4802 for one round wall box, R4802M2 for two wall boxes 71 mm apart, R4803 / R4804 / R4807 for Italian wall boxes.

Besides switches and sockets, the series includes blind controls, dimmers, a motion sensor, a Schuko socket with built-in USB-C, USB A+C chargers up to 3 A, TV/SAT and data sockets, and an emergency LED light that comes on during a power cut.

Smart home: Classia with Netatmo

The smart version replaces standard switches one for one, with no new wiring. At its heart is a gateway with a socket in the wall, and you control everything from the switch, from the Home + Control app and by voice - Siri, Google and Alexa. Battery-powered wireless switches stick onto the wall and last about 8 years, and the "Leaving" and "Coming home" scenes switch everything off or on with a single press.

Yes - the R4702G mounting frame has claws and does not rely on the wall box screws. The wall box just needs to be intact.
