bticino Light Now: installation and sets

bticino Light Now is a clean-lined Italian switch with a flat profile, tactile textures and an optional illuminated frame. Its mounting frame comes in a version with claws, so it fits even old or crookedly set round wall boxes. Here is what the series offers, which colours it comes in, how it is installed and how to put a set together.

What Light Now is

Light Now is the bticino series that won the iF Design Award 2024. The cover plate and the keys sit flush, so the switch looks like a single flat surface. The finishes are slightly grainy and pleasant to the touch - some are smooth, others have a natural texture.

  • A discreet LED indicator in the middle of the key - it glows white or blue and helps you find the switch in the dark.
  • Three types of control: an axial switch (the key sits flush with the frame - the most elegant option), a standard switch and a touchless switch that turns on when you hold your hand about 6 cm away.
  • Push-in terminals - the wires are connected in seconds, with no special tools.
  • Floating frame - a flexible profile at the back that aligns the cover plate by itself and hides uneven walls and crookedly set wall boxes.

All the mechanisms, colours and cover plates in the series are in the Light Now catalogue (PDF, in Bulgarian) - have a look before you choose.

Colours: 3 for the mechanisms, 9 for the cover plates

The mechanisms come in three colours. The letter after the Y in the code shows the colour: W - white, G - stone, D - graphite (for example switch YW4001A, YG4001A or YD4001A). The mechanism and the cover plate are chosen in matching tones.

The cover plates come in 9 colours, grouped into three ranges. The last two letters of the code are the colour - for example YA4802GG is a 2-module cover plate in Stone.

The cover plates and mounting frames are made from 50% recycled materials, and the packaging is plastic-free. The Patina cover plates have a deliberately "imperfect" look - each one is slightly different, like a natural material.

The illuminated frame - optional

The signature feature of the series is the LED frame, which washes the wall below the switch with soft light. It is optional and can also be added later: it fits between the wall box and the mounting frame, runs on 230 V and can stay on permanently or be switched on by a switch or a motion sensor. The codes are Y4702X (2 modules) and Y4703X (3 modules).

Where it is most useful: in the hallway and entrance at skirting-board height, on indoor staircases with a motion sensor, in the children's room and at the switch for the terrace.

Wall boxes: German or Italian standard

Most homes in Bulgaria have round Ø60 mm wall boxes (German standard, BDS). Light Now fits these as well as the rectangular Italian wall boxes.

  • German standard (round wall boxes): one wall box takes 2 modules. Two or more wall boxes are set 71 mm apart, centre to centre, and covered with a shared cover plate - up to 4 gangs (YA4802M2, M3, M4). Multi-gang cover plates can be fitted horizontally or vertically.
  • Italian standard: wall box 503E for 3 modules, 504E for 4 and 506L for 7 modules in one row (for plasterboard - PB503NN, PB504NN, PB506NN).

Y4702G mounting frame with claws - for old wall boxes too

For the round Ø60 wall box the catalogue specifies the Y4702G mounting frame (and the centred Y4719G) - with claws. The claws open out and grip the side of the wall box, so the frame does not rely on the wall box screws and can be fitted even when:

  • the wall box is old and its screws are missing or broken;
  • the wall box is set in crooked - the floating cover plate hides the tilt;
  • you do not want to break into the wall to fit a new wall box.

For square 502E wall boxes, plasterboard and surface mounting there are the screw-fixed frames Y4702, Y4702B and Y4719. The new mounting frames are up to 4 times stronger than the previous ones and come with a protective cap that keeps the mechanisms clean during painting.

Practical tip

The claws hold firmly, but the wall box must be intact and free of plaster. If its rim is crumbling, it is safer to replace the wall box.

How to put a set together

A set has three parts: a mounting frame, mechanisms and a cover plate. The cover plate clips on last, at the front.

  1. Mounting frame - Y4702G (claws) for a round wall box; Y4702 or Y4702B (screws) for 502E and plasterboard; Y4703 / Y4704 / Y4707 for Italian wall boxes.
  2. Mechanisms - a switch takes 1 module, a 15 W USB A+C charger 1 module, a Schuko socket 2 modules.
  3. Cover plate - 2M for one round wall box, 2+2M for two wall boxes 71 mm apart, 3M / 4M / 7M for Italian wall boxes.

Smart home: Light Now with Netatmo

The smart version of the series controls lights, blinds and sockets from the switch, from your phone and by voice (Alexa, Google, Apple), in the same design as the standard switches. It works wirelessly over your home Wi-Fi with a gateway in the wall, so it is a good fit for renovations without new wiring. The connected switch needs a neutral (N) in the wall box, and the wireless buttons can be stuck on anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Will Light Now fit an old or crookedly set round wall box?

Yes - with the Y4702G mounting frame with claws. It does not rely on the wall box screws, and the floating cover plate hides the tilt. The wall box just needs to be intact.

How many modules fit in one round wall box?

Two: for example a switch and a USB charger, two switches or one Schuko socket. For more modules, wall boxes are set 71 mm apart under a shared cover plate of up to 4 gangs.

Does the frame light up all the time?

The illuminated LED frame (Y4702X or Y4703X) is optional. It runs on 230 V and can stay on permanently or be switched on by a switch or a motion sensor.

What do the letters W, G and D in the code mean?

The colour of the mechanism: W - white, G - stone, D - graphite. For cover plates the colour is in the last two letters, for example GG - stone.

Is there a smart version?

Yes - Light Now with Netatmo, controlled from your phone and by voice.
